Month’s Mind – Sr Anthony RIP
Sr Anthony was Principal of St. Patrick’s Girls’s Academy in Dungannon from 1980-1988. She followed in the strong footsteps of her predecessor Mother Oliver in a very quiet and dignified manner. She had a very calm presence around the school and took great personal interest in each of the girls to ensure that everyone achieved their full potential. She was a great listener and had a calm way of resolving problems when they arose. Her motto was ‘Serve the Lord with Gladness’. She never raised her voice, but if any girls found themselves in her office for misdemeanors they often came out with a little prayer for guidance and doused with holy water.
The Sisters of Mercy celebrated their centenary year in 2000 and through this celebration a lot of interesting stories about the very worthwhile work of the nuns in and around the Dungannon area came to light such as the provision of food, shelter, money and counseling to needy families. Since Sr Anthony retired from teaching she continued with this vital work and was involved in many apostolic and pastoral groups in Dungannon Parish. She had great devotion to ‘The Messenger’ magazine and collected subscriptions for the magazine for many years. She was often seen in the Parish of Clonoe where she regularly visited her brother and sister and attended church events. The packed chapel for Sr. Anthony’s funeral was testament to the regard she was held in the Dungannon area by her relatives, her religious community, her parishioners, her teaching colleagues and students. May she have eternal rest in Heaven.
