Press Release: by Eleanor McGillie of MGMPR Ltd
Talented Karl McGuckin is rated as one of the finest classical singers in Northern Ireland. From Edendork, Karl’s potential as a classical soloist was spotted early on so he decided to take singing lessons from the renowned opera singer Irene Sandford in Belfast.
It wasn’t until he was 16 years old that he really caught the musical bug after auditioning for Youth Opera Northern Ireland. It was director Tim Rhys inspired him to go down a musical career path.
But Karl moved to Dublin to study Law at trinity College and then later trained at the Royal Irish Academy of Music.
Karl began his training in classical music under the tutelage of Dr Veronica Dunne in The Royal Irish Academy of Music where he won both an entrance scholarship and the Baritone Prize in the Samsung Feis Ceol.
Since then, he has sung with a number of critically acclaimed opera companies across the British Isles but now finds himself more regularly on the musical theatre stage.
Having become a regular feature in the musical theatre circuit in Belfast and Dublin, recent roles have included Bill Hickock in Calamity Jane, Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar, Jud in Oklahoma and Bill Bobstay in Lyric Opera’s production of HMS Pinafore in the National Concert Hall in Dublin.
Most recently Karl has played the role of Sweeney Todd for which he won the AIMs award for Best Male Singer in a Musical.
Since then Karl has had the opportunity to tour with the Celtic Tenors, Liam Lawton and the RTE Concert Orchestra. In most recent times he played the title role of Jekyll and Hyde in the Grand Opera House and Josef Locke on The Lyric Theatre stage in Belfast.
Karl has also made a name for himself as a producer having produced sell out concerts and shows in Armagh Cathedral, Clonard and in theatres throughout Northern Ireland.
We are delighted to have Karl perform at An Evening of Celebration. Also performing on the evening are Broadway actor Fra Fee, composer and musician Ryan Molloy, winner of The Voice UK Andrea Begley, sporano Gemma Prince, singer/songwriter Mairéad Duffy, brothers Ronan and Ruairi Stewart of Cúig and the band, 3’s A Crowd.
There will be a five course meal, guest speakers, an auction and a raffle and it’s a great opportunity too to network. So get your friends together and come along to what will be a fantastic evening.
All proceeds from this evening will go towards the running costs of the school and will ensure the school’s management team, teaching staff and pupils can continue to focus on achieving excellence together.
This is a ticketed only event. To secure a table or book individual tickets contact [email protected]. The school is also welcoming expressions of interest from past pupils who have an interest in joining St Patrick’s Academy Alumni Association.
