Tesco All-Ireland Senior C Semi-Final
St Patrick’s Dungannon 1-9 Scoil Mhuire Trim 2-6
ST PATRICK’S Academy were left hanging on for the draw at the end of this pulsating semi-final tie in the Dungannon on Saturday, but they might feel that they should have got more out of the game.
With ten minutes to go they held a lead of 0-9 to 0-4 and their defence was sound, not allowing the Scoil Mhuire attackers many opportunities to score.
Then a needless foul was given away to the Trim visitors around 55 metres out on the side-line. Leah Devine floated the sliotar across the goals where Abbye Donnelly knocked it back for Ellen O’Hara to blast to the net.
The pendulum had swung towards Scoil Mhuire, but the home side dug deep; sub Annabel McAteer intercepted, Reagan Fay moved the sliotar on and eventually it came through to Francine Farley who fired it from an acute angle to the Trim net.
Now it was four up for the Academy with five to play, but three minutes later O’Hara’s shot came back off the crossbar and straight to Carrie Doyle who batted it home.
A minute later Emma Regan plucked a poc out from the air, drove forward and hit an equaliser. In the three remaining minutes the Academy held tight, but there was no chance of another score for them and that all means a replay in Trim.
There was a strong breeze in the Academy’s favour in the opening half, but they didn’t really use it until Lára Devlin put them ahead 0-2 to 0-1 in the 12th minute. Reagan Fay landed a free and Devlin hit a second point all within a couple of minutes before Fay stepped up a gear with the next four points from play.
Eventually Leah Devine pointed a free in reply, but Francine Farley landed a super point from near the corner flag and the Academy turned over with a 0-9 to 0-2 lead. The only thing missing from a Dungannon perspective was a goal.
The Ulster champions’ defence with Aoife Forker superb as a sweeper controlled the opening 20 minutes of the second half with Lára Devlin always prepared to work for scraps at half-forward. Trim looked on the way out until the first goal and from there they eeked out a replay.
