QUB Psychology Graduate Wins UK Graduate of the Year Award

Congratulations to Kathy Ruddy, who has won the Graduate 100 Award as UK Graduate of the Year in the Social Sciences and Humanities.

13,000 graduates were nominated by their universities in ten award categories. One hundred shortlisted students were invited to the awards dinner in London on Wednesday 15th September 2010.  Kathy's award was presented by a representative from Bernard Hodes Group who sponsored the award in her category. Having made her acceptance speech Kathy presented an award to a representative from PricewaterhouseCoopers, the company which received most votes from the Social Sciences and Humanities students in the 'where graduates want to work' category.

Dragons Den star James Caan was also in attendance and made an inspirational speech prior to the awards. Representatives from all the major companies were also at the event, including Google, Deloitte, GlaxoSmithKline, BP, Microsoft, HSBC and many more.

Everyone in attendance received a keepsake book from the event, in which PM David Cameron has written a few words of support.

Identification of Gait Speed Using Spatiotemporal Information from the Sound of Footsteps
Research into sound perception has indicated that event-related sounds are inherently rich sources of information (Kramer et al., 1999). Currently there is a wealth of evidence regarding the encoding and retrieval of information from the environment through visual means (Gibson, 1950; Johansson, 1975). This study aimed to test the ability to perceive complex spatiotemporal information in natural sounds. We developed a method of generating sounds representing an actor walking on gravel at different speeds and tested the accuracy of speed identification among participants, investigating effects of gender and past musical training. Although participants were highly accurate on cadence cued trials, stride-length cueing was less easily perceived (p < .001). Musicians had only marginally higher accuracy and confidence ratings overall, while men were more confident overall (p = .033) and more accurate only in using stride length information (p = .007) than women were. Additionally, there was no difference between the naturalness ratings of synthetic and recorded sounds (p = .309), thus validating our synthesisation technique and providing the impetus to pursue more effective methods of conveying spatiotemporal information.

Role of Emotions in Mood - Ciara Ruddy

Ciara Ruddy has spent time working with one of the researchers in the David Keir building on the 'Open Your Mind' project.

This is an example of Ciara's university project work.

Ciara is also involved in volunatry work at university raising awareness of Mental Health.  A recent event involved a
balloon launch. Each balloon had statistics about mental health issues and contact details. One of the balloons made it to Wales, a farmer found it in his field and got in contact with the group.
