School Dining Room

St Patrick’s Academy is a Health Promoting School.  We encourage our students to make healthy food choices when they are in school.  To this end we provide a breakfast, morning break and lunch service in the school Dining Room and reinforce healthy eating messages across the curriculum.

Research has shown that the benefits of healthier eating in school are:

• Healthy growth and development
• Better health with less infection
• Improved concentration
• Better sports performance
• Better behaviour

Since September 2002 we have followed the DENI guidelines for Catering for a Healthier Lifestyle and in fact have not served Chips on the menu since this time. Over the past number of years we have developed menus to take into account the New Nutritional Standards for School Lunches and other food in schools (DENI Feb 2008)* as they have developed. The standards are very detailed, however, we would like to assure parents that we have been meeting them and will continue to provide a wide range of suitable foods for our pupils.  A summarised version of the standards and how St Patrick’s Academy are meeting them is available in the Nutrition/Healthy Eating Policy.  We will continue to provide a wide and varied range of items available at our breakfast, morning break and lunch services.  To encourage more pupils to snack on healthy food we will continue to sell fruit at competitive prices and use the Bonus Points system to encourage this.

We would ask parents who provide a packed lunch to consider what their son/daughter eats when at school and to please refrain from sending fizzy drinks, crisps and confectionery with them.  A leaflet is available with suggestions for healthier packed lunches on request.
